ART: cornstarch & watercolor

In addition to mixing watercolors, we combined a new substance...cornstarch. The soft pastels were beautiful as the children added the cornstarch to the mixture. While adding cornstarch, the mixture changes from a liquid, into a stiff combination, and finally into a solid! The children had a great time noticing the changes the mixtures were making right before their eyes!

The children even loved combining the two in their hands and feeling the mixture change right within their fingertips.

ART: mixing tempera paint

Right after we experimented mixing colors with liquid watercolors, we used our knowledge about mixing colors and used a new medium...TEMPERA PAINT. I’ve found that the children actually know what colors to mix together by experiencing it themselves and learning from others which colors they mixed to make their color. They have learned more about colors through this experience, than if I were to teach them through a book or other tool.

I love to use 1/2 pint canning jars for mixed paint. They are the perfect size and now they make wide-mouth and regular-mouth canning lids that are reusable. (Classico brand spaghetti sauce jars are also great pint jars. The regular-mouth lids work perfectly with these too. Wash them out and they're ready to go!) I used primary colors as well as white and black (for shades and tints). They LOVED being in charge of their own color! Most would scoop all their paint in and then mix it at the very end and watch their new color unfold. When they were finished with their color, they showed how they mixed it on the lid of their paint. That way, if we ever wanted to re-make the same color, they would have the recipe!

The project we did next was create a mural with all their mixed paint to create Elmer the elephant’s squares of patchwork. Murals are a great way for children to work directly with each other, and bring their artwork to the public.

Finally, we let put them on our paint shelf where they are easily accessible next to the art easel. These have been used several times, for various art projects. Aren't they just beautiful?

So...I know I haven't blogged in a while. I guess getting back into teaching has taken a lot of my time lately. I'd like to do more posts about ART. I have more to say about REAL ART in the classroom. But for now I'll post when I can...

One of my parents in my classroom approached me about taking pictures of their handsome boys. I was pretty nervous about it...especially since the mom is a graphic designer...and it was my very FIRST photo shoot of a family. They were so patient with me as I barely managed to think of poses on the spot, fumbled with the settings on my camera, and kept a 5 year old entertained! There's so much to think about, and I enjoyed every minute! Thanks so much Amy for this opportunity!

*I realized later that these photos could have been sharpened for the web, but you get the picture...

I hope you enjoyed some of my very first photo shoot. I'd love to do more if others ask...we'll wait and see! I'm still learning so much about the art of being a photographer. I hope to post more pictures soon. I have more to say about ART...just finding the TIME is another thing! Thanks for following! I appreciate all your feedback.

race for the cure

Andrew has always been known as "the runner", and he is...a fantastic one! But today, I joined him. We raced for a cure together. Today I knew what it felt like to run the race and not stand on the outside cheering. I ran my first ever race today. I'm so proud! We've been training all throughout the hot Phoenix summer for this day.

Today we ran to be a part of the impact to fight Breast Cancer. A day to celebrate the fight, and those who continue to fight, like my mother-in-law Elaine. I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to know her. She is a fighter in every sense of the word. God still has work for her to do, and is using her to share/show Jesus to others. The race was an emotional one. Each pink shirt I saw, reminded me of our human; sinful nature. The hope we have in the promise of eternity. A God who is faithful even when we can't see His plan and purpose. But He is constant, and continues to pour His promises and grace on us each day.

ART: color mixing

Our next adventure in ART is color mixing. We used liquid watercolors {diluted} and used eye droppers to mix into white paint trays. (I used white so they could clearly see their color as they mixed.) The eye droppers were a great fine motor skill as they learned how to squeeze and get just the right amount of liquid color in their tray.

As you can imagine, the children were in AWE as they explored making new colors!

Labor Day weekend, Andrew & I headed out to Albuquerque to spend time with Andrew's parents. There's nothing more relaxing than spending time with family! While we were there, New Mexico had it's largest wine festival. There were over 20 different wineries, and over 20,000 people were expected to attend the event that weekend.
We decided to check it out...

It was packed with people, but we were able to taste some very diverse wines, and food samplings! The art was fantastic! I wish I could have walked away with one of those glass globes. Can't you see a whole Christmas tree with those? Beautiful!! Thanks Walquists for having us!

ART: fingerpaint

This year, I wanted to do something different. It's called ART. As a preschool teacher it's easy to use pre-made templates, crafty designs, and cute projects that their parents would really like. My training in Early Childhood Education taught all about the process and how important each experience is for children. (This is why play is so important.) Children need the time to develop, discover, investigate, explore, etc. For the past few years, I have researched what this concept would mean, not only for my environment and each area of my classroom, but especially for ART. I was inspired by the Reggio Approach to teaching where there is so much RICH exploration and purpose for everything that they do. As teachers we are constantly evaluating and reflecting on what we can do better, and this year my focus is on ART. I mean REAL ART! not just making something cute, but purposeful.

This week we explored fingerpaint. Most had never even touched paint, let alone played in it! I started our art process with fingerpaint because I wanted them to explore colors mixing together, the texture of paint, the smell, and movement, as children run their fingers, the palms and backs of their hands, their arms and elbows across the slick paper. I invited the children to pick 2 colors of fingerpaint to begin their exploration. During this time, I wanted to emphasize the process and the sensory experiences with color and texture, rather than emphasizing a finished product. These pictures certainly tell that beautiful story!

first day of school

Parents were invited to visit the class for the first bit of school. The kids were THRILLED with their new environment and had lots of exploring to do...Since I had the parents there, I wanted them to be a part of the classroom and especially to do an art activity with their children. It was so inspiring to see them side-by-side exploring paint and mixing colors together. I'm thinking about doing more of this exploration with parents...possibly a parent night?

I'm not surprised that my class was SOLELY divided into the blocks and kitchen area. These are definitely familiar places to them when they arrive.

I just love the picture of father and son...creating, exploring, spending time meaningful together.

what i've been up to...

I've been neglecting my blog...I know...but I have a good reason! I've been working in my classroom lots this summer; organizing, sorting, going through files (embarrassingly enough...even from college). I had LOTS to go through! Well, here's a sneak peak of what I've been working on (I won't show you my files, although I did downsize from 6 boxes to 4 file boxes!)

I found an easy way to peel crayons...(I may be behind the times, some genius has already thought of this I'm sure)...take an exacto knife and cut the paper down the middle. Then all you have to do is peel it off like a wrapper! Took me no time at all!

This area will soon be filled with children's ART!

I got more drawing men! If you're wondering, they're cheapest at Hobby Lobby ($5) and with a 40% coupon, it's cheaper (compared to other stores at $15!)

I ♥ the writing center, and especially the REAL artwork my friend Allison Fees made for my classroom last year. Can't get enough REAL artwork in the classroom for those children!

More REAL art from my Grandmother who was a beautiful potter. This shelf is in all the classrooms and I decided it was far enough away from little hands to display some of my Grandma's pieces. It's also near the studio where we'll be doing clay sculptures.

Here's a glimpse of the studio...and a start of my artist collection.

The mason jars are waiting to be filled with a beautiful array of mixed, colored paint! On the shelves, I used colored masking tape to indicate where the colors will go. Then I put contact paper over the tape to secure it (at least for a little while).

I found these 2 bins at IKEA in the clearance section...$3.95 each! They were mine! We bought casters for the bottoms so they could easily be accessible under the computer desk. Ready for Portfolios!

And finally, a little space of my own...I love this picture of Andrew & I from our wedding, and the space would not be complete without my two friends "Elephant & Piggie" from my friend Rachel! Thanks Rachel! They will be well-loved!

a little anniversary dinner...

Wednesday for our anniversary, we ate at probably the most delicious pizza place; La Grande Orange. It's just up the street from us in Arcadia and is just fantastic! They are well known for their pizzas, but have also won awards for their burgers (which we will be back to try). The restaurant is small, but has a small shop next to it which sells pastries and other vintage items sold by local artists, and also has a gelato store as well! We were in heaven!

It's so nice to live in a BIG city and have wonderful restaurants to pick from! Did I mention they have carry out? But why carry out when you can have their "Famous White Sangria"? La Grande Orange...we'll be back for more!

Well we've been a little busy lately...seeing friends, having adventures, living in HEAT, and working. We're adjusting very well to the move to Phoenix, just not the unbearable 110 degree heat (however we do love living without humidity). Andrew decided that 110 degrees was the threshold he could handle as he lives in his car doing home pediatric physical therapy...with little to no air conditioning running in his '96 Honda Accord, which by the way, now has no muffler (it rusted and fell off last week) and sounds like he should be drag racing in the desert. Nice. We aren't complaining though, it's a luxury to have a car in the first place and we're trying to run it to the ground. I guess we're taking that literally!

*UPDATE* air conditioning died in the car yesterday...sad day for the Walquists!

We did however, see a Cardinals game a while ago with our friend Becky...she loves the Cardinals!

Nice weather, but sad game as we lost to the Diamondbacks...

During this time of weddings, it makes me think about my family "in-law"...so, let me tell you a little about the family I married into. Randy & Elaine are proud parents to three, Kim, Amy & Andrew. Randy is a pastor down in Albuquerque and Elaine was a teacher for many years and now tutors and teaches piano along with a slew of other things! They are wonderful in-laws...truely a fantastic family. Amy & Jason met in college and Kim always said to Jason, if he had a brother...that would be perfect!...and he does...Matt. Yep brothers married sisters...and even had a double wedding! Quite the family!

When I was a teenager I would pray for my future husband. I remember going to a Rebbecca St. James concert and she talked about how she used to write letters to her future husband praying for him, and stored them in a box under her bed. Then when she got married, she gave them to her husband. Well, as I prayed for my future husband, Andrew, I never thought to pray for my future family-in-law. Boy am I blessed...I not only have an amazing family of my own (I really do), but my extended family is truely a gift from God. They are prayer worriers, faithful, close, fun, game-playing, thoughtful, loving and especially welcoming. God has blessed all of us. What an answer to prayer!

Our last morning in Florida was spent relaxing at the beach. The water was so warm, like bath water, and so calm in the morning. There were hardly any waves...yet. It was hard to believe that we would be leaving the ocean for a while.

Andrew & mom were finding treasures and seemed to be looking at something in the water...

Sure enough, there was a school of fish...just swimming along by their feet! Pretty cool huh? We saw several schools while we were there and even some bigger fish too! The water was unbelievably clear (come to think of it...I guess we were in "Clearwater beach").

Like I said, so clear and calm, that mom & I actually took our beach chairs and put them in the water...never done that one before!

Then, only a few yards out, we could see a huge dark shadow...can you guess what these are?

Sting rays!! Yep, it's sting ray season. I had no idea they swam in groups of 20 or so! This was the best picture I could get without getting too close for comfort...although these guys (below) were already out there...can you see the dark area where the sting rays are swimming toward this group of people?
The key is to stay put and don't move when they're swimming around you in the water. Yeah...sounds a little freaky to me too. We had lots of sting rays swim by us while we were there. My cousin Owen even got stung by one...it's not a family trip without heading to the hospital! We even got to see a manatee!!! Although I didn't get a good shot of it...it was pretty awesome how much ocean life we were able to see. Can't wait to come back!

I didn't actually get any pictures of the wedding ceremony...you'll have to check out a few pictures from their photographer on Loving Legacy's facebook page. They did an excellent job!

The reception was just beautiful! Lots of dancing, great food, and of course, friends and family. It was so hard to get great shots during the reception...it was so dark in there! Bear with me through some of these blurry ones...you get the picture though.

Like I said, just beautiful! The bride & groom came back from their honeymoon recently...they sure enjoyed every minute away together in Jamaica!! That's the last of the wedding pictures. There were a few more Florida pics I'll post soon...lots of adventures still to tell you about!

Okay, so I have to apologize...I've been off the grid for a little over a week now. It was partially because my photoshop quit working. (Sad news when you have eager fans to view Nate & Jacqui's wedding). So alas! I give you...picture time!

After a few quick family pics, the bridal party headed to a park nearby. Remember, this is Florida in May...and it was HOT & HUMID! Jacqui gave all the bridesmaids a parasol which helped with the sun and even provided an opportunity to fan ourselves for the moments we weren't taking pictures. Going outside was a little adventurous for all of us, but we made it and got some beautiful pictures because of it.

The BIG DAY arrived for Nate & Jacqui! We were so happy to share in it with them! First, our day of pampering, prepping, and getting ready. Andrew looked at these pictures and noticed, "You girls had wine"? Yes, that's how we get ready...bridesmaid style! Jacqui is crazy beautiful...(she doesn't even have make-up on yet...and still looks this amazing)!

Nate looked a little nervous...that day started the rest of their lives together! They were so happy!

One of the greatest parts of this wedding was spending time with family and friends. We L♥VE family and soak up every minute we have with them. This picture below is a quintessential picture of the two of us...Nate doing what he's supposed to (look at the camera) and I'm talking. I can't tell you how many pictures we have growing up of this exact pose. (Just a few...sorry mom!) All she wanted was a cute picture of us!

wedding extravaganza {deadliest catch}

When we hit the beach...we noticed a TON of people crowded around a fisherman with what looked like a GIANT fish. (sorry for the overexposure...although it makes this photo a little mysterious about what this fisherman caught)

As we took a closer look, we definitely saw that the GIANT fish was just a hammerhead SHARK! I guess this is pretty common, because we heard just a few days later someone caught a shark as well. I have to admit, it made me a little more nervous getting into the ocean. Things looked well under control, so I got really close to take some awesome pics for you all!

The fishermen got the hook out and tried to release him, but he just hung around!! Still not sure I want to get in that "shark infested" ocean...

The fishermen FINALLY helped him make his escape out past the waves and into the ocean. At this point, I figured I'm only here for a little while, and have to head back to the Arizona heat...so why not take the risk! The ocean was so warm...like bath water! So good!

The rehearsal went smoothly...off without a hitch...then to party Peregoy style!

It was so hard to decorate from afar. I'm sure all groom families have this problem. It's tough! The colors were BLACK & WHITE, so an easy palate to work with. Andrew & Dad picked up these flowers and pots for centerpieces. (They did pretty well don't you think?) Thanks to some help from the Beverlins, we got this place looking fabulous!

wedding extravaganza {part one}

What a spoiled weekend. We did nothing but eat seafood and lay on the beach! I certainly can't complain...the seafood...oh, am I a seafood lover!! Let me just take a moment to acknowledge the oysters, shrimp, scallops, crab, crabcakes, and more! I realize Arizona has a lack of fresh seafood and so it makes our trips to Florida even sweeter. Next time, lobster for Christmas! I really do miss our times living on the East Coast...nothin' but shellfish. Needless to say, we enjoyed every minute of the supply of fresh seafood!

Nate took us to this fun Oyster Bar (seafood place) called PJ's. It definitely had character!

I can still taste the salty goodness. More pictures of the wedding coming up...stay tuned!

lubbock arts festival

Well, if you're wondering...we've finally arrived in Phoenix! It's been a crazy couple weeks with the move, but we survived and are settled (until we find a house and move again!).
It makes me cringe thinking of moving AGAIN!
The weekend before we headed out of Texas, we were able to check out Lubbock's arts festival. They put it on once a month and have local artists display their art all around downtown Lubbock. This event is so huge! It literally is in wine tasting shops, car dealerships...you name it, they use the space for local art! How cool is that?!? They really appreciate art and celebrate local artists.
The hearts in these pictures were all around downtown.

FOLF

Or as some may call it...Frisbee Golf! After a long day of partying...we headed out to play FOLF. (Remember, the Walquists really like to play games)...and so play we did...in the hot and heavy humidity! It was pretty sticky out there, but we loved having all the family there to play.

Ian enjoyed the ride...who wouldn't? We even found some wild blackberries!

ian's 1st b-day {the party}

Ian seemed to really enjoy having all his friends over. We usually don't see him interact with other kids (because it's just us "boring" grown-ups). It was fun to see him excited to see all his friends, show them his toys and engage in a different kind of play.

...and of course it's not a party without CAKE & Bluebell ICE CREAM!

Ian wasn't too interested in the cake...he kind of just poked at it. Then we gave him some Bluebell ice cream and he was SOLD! He instantly thought it was cold and didn't know what to do with that...it was fun watching his reactions to his first time with sugar, chocolate, ice cream. He eventually found how fun it was just to play with his food!

...and presents, of course!

This is Brooke. She is adorable! She instantly fell madly in love with Andrew. Can you see her flirting with him in these pictures? They were all of here interacting with Andrew...this is some TOUGH competition! The last one looks like she got caught...I'm keeping my eye on her...too cute though!

...and like I said in yesterday's post, Ian was practicing a lot of WALKING...

It was fun to be altogether again. Lately we've been missing a couple here or there, and it now felt complete with all of us there. Time for a family pic!

We traveled to Houston for Ian's 1st Birthday party!

When we arrived...Ian and Andrew were doing some new Physical Therapy things...like WALKING!

Our big task the day before was to make the barnyard birthday cake. It was quite a feat trying to make everything stand up and all work together. In the end, it was a hit at the party! Our work payed off.

Today is my 100th post!

I wanted to thank you all for continuing to support us as we travel this year. In a week we'll be moving to Phx, and starting a new chapter in our lives. Thanks for your encouraging comments (we really love comments), your prayers, and keeping up with the blog. The blog has gone through some transformations throughout the year, and although it is sometimes hard to keep up with, you all continue to regularly check up on our lives. Thanks!

I'm so excited!! Guess what showed up on our doorstep? Yep, our books have been published at My Publisher and have arrived!

I've been looking for a way to make something with all our traveling pictures (we've taken a lot). I also didn't cart around my scrapbooking supplies either, (there just wasn't enough room...although I could've made some room for my sewing machine...second though, probably not). So I looked into many publishing companies that publish your books into a beautiful book. There are many companies out there, but My Publisher was easy to navigate, make, and their customer service was excellent (very prompt). PLUS you can download it from the Costco website and get 20% off each order. (That one sealed the deal!)

There are so many ways to make each book unique. My Publisher has so many templates, and you can even add text if you'd like. We were so happy to finally see them and relive all the memories! Now they won't just be pictures stored on the hard-drive anymore...

Needless to say, we were very pleased with the results. We made a book for each traveling experience (Texas is still a work in progress)...

summer toes

Recently Andrew & I have been called to be a part of the ministry at Christ Lutheran Church & School in Phoenix, AZ. In just about 2 weeks, we'll be headed to Phoenix to end our long year of traveling. I'm still having mixed feelings about "settling down". Yes, I'm excited about owning a home, decorating, sewing, having those things we've missed during our travels (like kitchen knives, coffee mugs, counter-space, and so much more). At the same time, I'll miss the spontaneity of getting in the car and road-tripping to amazing places, not caring how long the drive takes but enjoying the adventure. We've had the opportunity to do so many things this year, go so many places, and have so many unique experiences. It's sad to see that coming to a close. I guess I can look at it that way...sad...but if anything this experience has taught us to be adventurous, and not take for granted where we live. It's now a new way of living. Our weekends may be busier, and time may be shorter, but we can still carve out that time...if it's important (at least I hope we can).
Who says our adventures have to end?

So I paint my summer toes, ready for many sunny days to come, and knowing that it's only the beginning of a new chapter in our adventures, not an end.

carlsbad caverns {day two}

{Day 2} in the caves, we decided to take a tour through the King's Palace and see the Queens Chambers. It was so worth doing the tour! We got to see the most fantastic parts of the cave. Don't get me wrong, {day 1} was full of surprises and fascinating formations, but the TOUR...well, see for yourself...

The tour was chalk-full of information on the caves and a great way to ask questions. They even did a black out, where they turned out the lights lighting up the cave features. It was unlike any experience. If you have the chance, take the King's Palace tour...

We stopped to eat lunch and this is where we got to sit. Yep, lunch by lantern...

There were so many formations and cave features...these are just a few. I hope I didn't bore you, especially because they're all black/white pictures. To be completely honest, these pictures are nothing like it in person. The cave itself was so VAST...there's a reason it is the largest cavern in the Western Hemisphere. Go check it out for yourself!

Tip: If you're planning on going and you'd like to take pictures...use a tripod...because it's so dark, the shutter is exceptionally long and the slightest movement will make the picture come out blurry. (We also put most of these pictures on the self-timer.)

We stayed in a little bed & breakfast in Artesia, NM...known for its oil. I learned that pretty much everything in East NM is a little like TX...everything in West NM is pretty much like AZ, and everything North of NM is like CO! It's kinda nice having a husband who has grown up his whole life in New Mexico and can teach me a few things.

I had yet to experience Blake's Lottaburger. They are very popular in Albuquerque, and the 7-8 years we've dated and married combined I have yet to go to the famous burger joint. Look what we found in Carlsbad...

Delicious! There aren't too many places that actually serve "green chilies" on a burger. It was fantastic!

Then we drove, walked around Artesia and captured some awesome pictures!

Yep, we found this turquoise/blue TRAIN...fantastic...so Andrew became my handsome model.

We found some really unique things in Artesia...I just love the random hay outside a feed store. That's how I know we've hit country!

carlsbad caverns {day one}

This weekend Andrew & I took a trip to see Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. It's just about the only touristy thing close enough to Lubbock we can do...and it was a FREE weekend! Woohoo! I have been to Meramac Caverns in Missouri, but nothing quite close to this cave! It really was spectacular. Friday, because Andrew has Fridays off during this traveling site, we walked down the cave through the "natural trail". It's so worth doing this...it's all downhill about 800 feet but you really get to see a lot of formations...and this is where the bats fly out!

Here are some pictures just to give you an idea of scale...

Like I said...MASSIVE! We got some pictures on our hike down, and then the camera battery died...(note to self, check camera battery). So enjoy just a few pictures to give you a taste. I'll post more the next couple days!

Remember those science lessons..."stalagmites" grow on the floor of the cave, and "stalactites" grow from the roof (they stay "tight" to the ceiling)!

a beautiful sewing machine...

While visiting ABQ, I used Elaine's sewing machine to stitch up some more Birthday Banners...and look what I saw!... A turquoise sewing machine? I'm in LOVE!
Just look at all it's beautiful vintage features...

and of course, it works like a charm!
I was a little nervous about the knee petal. (I've always used a foot petal)...but I actually think the knee petal is easier!

I just couldn't help but take these pictures and share them with all of you! I hope to have a craft/sewing room (if not area) in my house someday...wouldn't one of these pictures look cool framed in the room? I'm already in the works...now to just find a house to put them in :)

albuquerque

On our way to Albuquerque, we were greeted by a beautiful thunderstorm to entertain us.
Little did I know that thunderstorms are quite common in April in Eastern New Mexico...it was quite a sight!

Friday evening, the Walquists were offered tickets to the Albuquerque Symphony! We had fun getting ready...

Elaine and I were thrilled to go enjoy the symphony. That evening they even featured a choir, quartet and of course amazing music!

I wanted to thank those of you who sent such kind comments. I just love reading what you write! Thanks so much and keep writing!

It's Ian's 1st birthday coming up soon, and I made him this adorable

birthday banner...

Isn't it cute?

I got 20x18 inch fat quarters at Hancock Fabrics, ironed them onto "wonder-under", and cut out my my letters with New Yorker font. Finally I used "no sew fabric glue" and glued the double fold bias tape. I'm sure you could just sew the bias tape on...but alas...only a few more months without my sewing machine!

It will be such a joyous day!! I have so many projects in mind with that machine!

aren't these tulips sweet? They're from Andrew...I just love flowers from my man!

the great urban race: {part two}

The rules of the race stated we could NOT use a car...but we COULD use public transportation. We were so glad to use the bus because our clues were spread out all over downtown Austin.

One challenge was to lasso a bull! Andrew & Matt did a great job on their first try!

At one point, when we had finished finding all the clues, we realized that we missed the last bus in our area. We had to walk the whole way back...not a fun task when we knew we were finished. But it was fun to enjoy Austin and really see the city.

We just barely did it, but we finished!! Even while missing the last bus, a baby, baby stuff, and bulky costumes!

We were so happy to finish in time! What do you think about our costumes? There was a prize for the best costume...Andrew & I made the final top 5...but Homer & Marge Simpson took the prize. It was pretty clever.
How did we do on replicating the Walquists old Halloween costume?

Ian really was a trooper the whole time. We think he enjoyed all the hustle and being outside to watch. There was a lot to take in!

We finished the evening with pizza at...

We thoroughly enjoyed the great urban race! It is spread out all over, so if you have a chance, sign up and go! It may even give you an excuse to visit a local city nearby. You won't regret it!

We started our adventure at this restaurant...

We had to solve the clues first, map out our route, and then get our stamps at each location to complete the race.

It really was a beautiful day in Austin, TX. We couldn't complain one bit! We especially enjoyed seeing Austin in spring bloom.

How to make a fresh...

When the Walquists came to town, Elaine had a wonderful idea to bake a

FRESH PEACH PIE

It's one of my 27 things to do before I turn 27...bake a pie.

Elaine brought all kinds of tips and tricks to help us

(I'll share them in this post)

Enjoy!

{This recipe is for a 9-inch TWO-crust pie}

start by:

heating your oven to 425 degrees

FILLING:

(set your filling to the side and start making your pastry)

PASTRY:

mix flour, salt & shortening in a bowl
sprinkle in COLD water 1 tablespoon at a time
mixing until all flour is moistened and dough almost cleans the side of bowl.

Gather the dough into ball and DIVIDE in half
(one for the crust and one for the top)

TIP #1
~it's best to use a stockinet covered rolling pin & cloth to roll dough with~

roll out your dough 2 inches larger than inverted pie pan
fold pastry in half and "ease into pan"
(HA!)
(this is the hardest part...it cracked everytime for me!
eventually we used the other half of the pastry and made more dough for the lattice top)

trim overhanging edge of pastry
(you shouldn't have all the holes...but I did...oh the joys of learning
if you do, just use the excess dough to fill in the holes)

see...voila!
all fixed!

pour your pie filling into your beautiful pastry-lined pie pan
(let sit while you make your lattice top)

roll out your remaining (other half) pastry dough
cut strips of dough around 3/4 of an inch

TIP #2
~if your dough does not cooperate...you may have to do this...and try again~

(this time I made sure it was round by adjusting the dough each time I rolled)

(you really want a great top...if you roll it out too many times...it gets crumbly and won't cook right)

lay your strips of lattice starting with a cross FIRST in the middle
and then weave like a basket...
LIKE THIS!

see those overhanging lattice pieces above? DON'T cut them!
instead tuck them underneath your pie crust

once you've tucked your lattice,
pinch the sides so it doesn't spill and it keeps it's shape
-it's called "flutting"

we added a few tiny pieces of butter in between the lattice
but that's optional

TIP #3
~Elaine brought this pie base (in case it overflows)~
&
~pie shield (so the edges don't burn)~

at this point, you're supposed to cover with foil
(we didn't have any and it still turned out fine)
*If you DO use foil, remove it the last 15 minutes of baking*

bake pie a TOTAL of
35-45 minutes

TIP #4
~you know when a pie's done when it bubbles through slits in the crust~

REMOVE pie
(let set for a little while)
&
EAT!

It was so fun to make!

a trip to Tucanos, a Brazilian Grill near church.

there are lights...all the time

it's not even COLD here

you could easily get away with not having Christmas in Vegas.

So we were very excited to hear they had a HUGE

It was 30 degrees out!!
...so cold...
yet worth it to see the whole atmosphere of the race!
